On the next morning, a Saturday, we got up, got dressed, and headed out on Hwy 89 toward Sunset Crater, which is an extinct volcano, complete with fields of lava and cinder cones. We we arrived, there was a faint scent that I believe was the lava. It vaguely reminded me of the smell of welding metal with a torch. I could only detect it for a short time. It was somewhat hot, but we enjoyed the walk. It was fun to actually walk among the lava fields, surrounded by extinct volcanoes. Below are a couple of pictures. The second image contains part of a cinder cone.

After the volcano tour, we went to Wupatki, an 800-year-old remnant of what is thought to have been a meeting place, and the largest pueblo around. Although much of the pueblo is gone, the ruins are still interesting and well worth a visit. Below are a few pictures of Wupatki.

There were more ruins near the road, some nearer than others.

After this adventure, we drove to the Arizona Snow Bowl, which is a ski area. I rode a chair lift from a height of 9500 feet to 11,500. The views were wonderful. It was almost like flying–well, maybe more like hovering. Many times, the chair was high above the ground, which is why I rode alone. Someone else remained below. I did get a headache in the way down, probably as a result of going from 7000 feet (at Flagstaff) to 11,500 in the space of about an hour.

We ate at Denny’s in Flagstaff that night and went to bed at 8:30. The next day we were going to the Grand Canyon.
